How can we create an inspiring place to study and work in academia? How can university researchers, teachers, and administrative units work to the best of their ability? And how is cooperation key to sustainable development? The 2024 Annual Report of the University of Hamburg holds all the answers about cooperations at the University level, with partners in the city and others.
The report is concise and vivid: Four chapters describe various examples of cooperation. In interviews and reports, the persons in charge provide exciting insights into ideas, challenges, and solutions. Two newly founded University institutions are introduced: The Hub of Academic Career & Research Culture offers innovative academic career paths while the Hub for Crossdisciplinary Learning is a central measure for promoting interdisciplinary teaching.
The University as a center of exchange
Good examples of successful collaboration in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region are the Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld, the strategic cooperation platform PIER PLUS, and the Hamburger Horizonte event series—a flagship project, that builds bridges between academia and society by bringing together experts from science and scholarship, politics, culture, and society in the Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
The University’s sustainability efforts have captured attention all across Germany thanks to its first place in the QS Sustainability Ranking achieved by strategically anchoring the topic and numerous related measures and events in the University. Find all details about this in the 2024 Annual Report as well as information about the University’s focus on strengthening the German start-up culture. We could celebrate first successes in the Startup Factories competition.
The University of Hamburg has also lived up as a hub for intensive intellectual exchange: In 2024, we have expanded our strategic relationships across the world, for instance, through visits at partner universities and joint exchange and teaching formats. In research, the University’s 4 clusters of excellence jointly provide fresh impetus with a worldwide appeal and maximum impact. The funding extension for the clusters of excellence granted at the end of May 2025 underscores their eminent research work—find all the details in the Annual Report!
German, English, and accessible
The 2024 Annual Report is aimed at all members of the University, cooperation partners, and other research institutions. We also hope many Hamburg residents will take the opportunity to read more about their University. Our new report spans 100 pages, is accessible and available in both German and English for the first time.
