The Long Night of the US Election offers lectures and discussions, among other things.
On 5 November 2024, the new president of the United States will be elected. University of Hamburg researchers will accompany this election night in cooperation with the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Hamburg and the communal cinema Magazin. A special live program will start at 8 pm free of charge.

The US voting system is complex and the result of this election will affect the entire world. Our Long Night of the US Election offers a diverse program and explanations.

In addition to a presentation of the film Recount, which tells the story of the controversial 2000 presidential election, there will be brief presentations, a video clip, and a panel discussion with experts. The audience will get a grasp on how the US presidential elections work and what the discussions about redrawing voting districts are all about. In addition to the local program, there will also be live-transmissions from the US to capture the spirit of the election day.

The program is to commence at 8 pm at Magazin Filmkunsttheater, Fiefstücken 8A, 22299 Hamburg, and will end at approximately 6 am the next morning. Starting at 1 am on 6 November, there will be a special coverage live stream via PBS News, the noncommercial US news network, accompanied by brief lectures and discussions.

Prof. Dr. Michaela Hampf and Prof. Dr. Thorsten Logge from the Department of History of the University of Hamburg will host the event. The professors organized the public screening of this pivotal election together with the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Hamburg and the Magazin cinema. “The US election result will strongly impact Germany and Europe. We want to use this event to explain what is happening,” says organizer Prof. Dr. Michaela Hampf, acting professor of North American history at the University of Hamburg. The special atmosphere at the cinema and the various formats are to stimulate exchange and make the topic tangible.

Find all information and the event program at The Long Night of the 2024 US Election website. Reserve a free seat online! Members of the press can also register separately with Prof. Hampf and the organizational team.
