The 2-day event, with talks, panel discussions, and interactive activities in and around the Audimax, targets students, researchers, and all other sustainability advocates.
“The Sustainability Days are a great opportunity for our University to become a place for exchange on the topic of sustainability and to foster dialogue between scientists, students, and the broader public,” says Prof. Dr. Laura Marie Edinger-Schons, the University of Hamburg’s chief sustainability officer. “Our goal is to develop solutions to today’s urgent challenges and to generate knowledge for a transformation towards sustainability.”
The 2-day, largely English-language event begins on Monday with a live stream of the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, which Prof. Dr. Natalia Filatkina, vice president for studies and teaching, will open. Throughout the day, there will be different discussions with different perspectives on sustainability, including from Prof. Xiaomeng Shen, vice rector of the United Nations University in Europe and director of the UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security. You can also visit the tiny house throughout the day on the Von-Melle-Park Campus, where there will be introductions to sustainability projects at the University of Hamburg.
The highlight will take place in the Audimax on 8 October. After the opening and words of welcome, there will be, among other things, a discussion on sustainability in Hamburg with Jens Kerstan, Hamburg’s senator for the environment, climate, energy, and agriculture. In a panel discussion on sustainability research at the University of Hamburg, scientists and scholars in different fields will talk about how their own research can contribute to the sustainability transformation. Film producer Lars Jessen, author Kübra Gümüsay, Tatjana Kiel from We Are All Ukrainians, and Viva con Aqua co-founder Micha Fritz will also be part of the panel. In addition, experts in the academic and economic sectors will be looking together at the question as to whether digitalization is a curse or a blessing for sustainability.
The University of Hamburg’s Sustainability Days will conclude with music from Rolf Stahlhofen (Water is Right) and Nicholas Müller (Jupiter Jones) as well as a biodiversity show from Dominik Eulberg.
Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren, president of Universität Hamburg: “The University of Hamburg is a university for sustainability and we are looking forward to hearing a broad range of perspectives and ideas at the Sustainability Days and to find ways together to make our city and our society more sustainable. It’s great that this platform event at our University of Excellence is happening at the same time as and within the context of the world-renowned Hamburg Sustainability Conference. Cooperation and exchange are the key to a sustainable future."
The University of Hamburg welcomes anyone interested in the topic to take part in the Sustainability Days and strive together for a sustainable future. See the University’s sustainability pages for the program and link to sign up, which is required for a few of the events.
