Universität Hamburg's University Council has nine honorary members, four of them appointed by the Academic Senate and four by the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Together these elect a ninth member and name a chairperson.
The Council is largely responsible for the strategic control of the University. In addition to electing and voting out of University President and Kanzler the University Council also oversees the authorization of business plans as well as the acceptance of the presidium's annual reports.
In its constituent meeting on 3 May 2012 the University Council reelected the Physician and former director of DESY (Deutsches Elektronen Synchroton) Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Abrecht Wagner as chairman and Maria von Welser as deputy chairwoman.
The University Council provides University members with regular updates on all topics and results of its meetings.
