Development and evaluation of an interpreter training module for bilingual hospital employees

The aim of the project T5 is to develop and evaluate a training module for bilingual medical staff who act as ad hoc-interpreters. The project is based on research on interpreted doctor-patient-communication, done by Kristin Bührig and Bernd Meyer at the Research Center on Multilingualism from 1999 to 2005.

The training focuses on those institutional types of discourse that contain „difficult“ and „delicate“ issues, such as transmitting bad news (e.g. diseases, side effects of treatment, etc.).

The planned training module intends to enable ad hoc-interpreters to reflect and expand their verbal and communication skills in order to optimise the process of interpreting.
