EUR 1.1 million for new DFG research group at Universität Hamburg on the climatic consquences of salt levels in the ocean
The German Research Foundation (<em>DFG</em>) has authorized a new research group under the ageis of Universität Hamburg. The project, "A New Approach toward Improved Estimates of Atlantic Ocean Freshwater
Budgets and Transports as Part of the Global Hydrological Cycle,"involves researchers from the fields of oceanogrphay, atmospheric physics and air-water interaction. Other participating institutions include the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, the University of Bremen, the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and the German Weather Service. Spokesperson is Prof. Dr. Detlef Stammer from the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability. The project will run for six years and receive a total of EUR 1.1 million in funding from the German Research Foundation. Researchers aim to analyze variations in the inflow of fresh water into the Atlantic and the consquences of this for the ocean. The Atlantic is considered a key region with regard to global climate activity.
