Certificate in Research and Higher Education Management
The "Compass Certificate in Research and Higher Education Management" specifically prepares young researchers at Universität Hamburg for a successful career start in higher education management and provides consolidated proof of acquired skills for job applications. You obtain the certificate by attending designated Compass events over two or more semesters. The program is primarily conducted in German.
The first step towards the certificate is an orientation event. After attending the orientation event, you may contact us to register in the program. You can find more detailed information on the program in the drop-down boxes below.
The initial orientation module provides an overview of possible fields of activity, job requirements, and perspectives in research and higher education management so you can check them against your own career aspirations. Should you then consider working in research and higher education management, you may formally register in the program. The orientation module is a mandatory prerequisite for registering and must be completed first.
You first take part in the workshop "Berufsfeld Wissenschaftsmanagement". Following the event, you prepare a written reflection (about one page) on your individual learning and development objectives within the program. You must submit this written reflection to register.
The next possibility to start into this program:

These workshops are only open to program participants.
To take part in these workshops, you must have attended an orientation event and submitted your written reflection.*

*If you attended an orientation event and thus entered the program prior to Winter Semester 2018/19, you do not have to submit a written reflection. If you have any questions, please contact HR Development.
Strategic Career Planning
The Strategic Career Planning Module concludes the Certificate. An individual advising session or in a small group helps you to define concrete professional goals, make decisions, and plan possible career steps in research and higher education management. You also receive professional feedback on a job application you prepare beforehand for a concrete job opening in research and higher education management. Following the event, you prepare a written reflection (about 1 page) summarizing your professional goals and ideas, together with concrete steps towards your career in research and higher education management. You must submit this written reflection to obtain the Certificate.
