Social Media: A Vehicle of Change?
Thanks to social media, the role of the media in political protests has grown immensely. Today, just one post by a person or an institution with a large enough follower base can even start an entire movement. Demonstrations are now organized and coordinated via online means of communication. Messengers, blogs, and social networks are more efficient in bringing people to the streets than flyers and posters. Protest movements in Moscow and Hong Kong were coordinated online. And Greta Thunberg inspired millions of people to take to the streets merely by the means of her online presence. How are governments dealing with the current situation? Is this the ultimate freedom of speech or are we approaching a dystopian society where every word uttered against the government is recorded? What are the future implications of this transition? All this and more will be discussed during this intercultural PIASTA week. We'd love to see you there and discuss with you the role social media plays in our society!
