The Common European Reference Framework for Languages
The Common European Reference Framework for Languages was developed by the European Council to enable transparent and international comparisons of the language skills of students by creating universal levels. If you are interested in studying a foreign-language, GER may provide you recommendations with regard to minimum requirements for acceptance to foreign-language academic programs. The information on the Common European Reference Framework for Languages (PDF) provides you with detailed escription of the reference framework and its levels with a particular focus on level 1, which is recommended for admission to foreign-language academic programs.
Language tests required for university admission
Sound German language skills are essential if you wish to study at Universität Hamburg. Therefore, to get your admission you have to submit proof of adequate Germans proficieny (language certificate) at the latest by the beginning of your first semester (winter semester: 1st October, summer semester: 1st April).
English-language master's programs are an exception. Please check the relevant program descriptions for language requirements.

Academic aptitude tests required for university admission
In addition to pure language tests, there also is the general "academic aptitude test TestAS". TestASis a national, standardized academic aptitude test for international students who would like to commence a first degree program (in the first semester) at a German university. It's results can provide information about your abilities in comparison to those of other applicants. The aptitude test can be taken in German or English.
At Universität Hamburg TestAS ist voluntary, but it plays a particularly important role when applying to progrmans with admission restrictions.
