Poster Competition: UN Sustainable Development Goal 10 Reduced Inequalities
The Poster Competition SDG 10 gives students an opportunity to work on the UN Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequality within and across countries. Participants can share research and ideas on SDG 10 and the issue of inequality and how to reduce it.
Students are encouraged to design and submit a poster on SDG 10. Entrants compete for prizes in 3 categories: (1) undergraduate, (2) graduate, and (3) people's choice. Winners will participate with international partners at the Virtual Global Competition on 24 January 2021.

Requirements:
- Open to undergraduate and graduate students, including doctoral students.
- Students must be enrolled at Universität Hamburg at the time of submission.
- Entries are limited to one poster per student.
- Poster proposals must be submitted togther with a UHH faculty advisor. Faculty members must be employed by Universität Hamburg with the status postdoc or higher; advisors must be named on the poster.
- Poster proposals must be sumbitted by the deadline given above.
- Posters must fullfill the outlined requirements, which are detailed in the next tab (Poster specifications).
The following research poster specifications must be fulfilled
Basic
- Dimensions: 1280 x 800 pixels
- Quality: 300 dpi or less
- Size: maximum file size: 12 MB
- File format: .pdf or .jpg
- Title of project displayed prominently
- Student and faculty mentor names included in design
- Language: English
Content
- Clear argument and link to UN Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries
Include a project description and/or research question, literature review, sources, methods, findings and conclusion
Should include international dimension, originality - Background: Poster explains central problem or impetus for project’s creation. This background informs the goal/thesis/hypothesis of project.
- Methodology: Poster leads audience through your process for solving the problem or working toward goal.
- International focus: Make a connection between local and global efforts as well as a direct connection to SDG 10.
- Pictures and graphs are labeled properly and serve purpose in explaining content.
- References are cited within sections or at the bottom of the poster.
Visual Appearance and Creativity
- Text is easily readable.
- Pictures are of high resolution and do not appear pixilated.
- Graphics should be used to visually display tabular material.
- Poster should have a unifying color/stylistic theme.
- Pictures and text should appear in relatively equal proportion.
Conventions and Voice
- The poster content is written in an academic tone.
- The poster should have no spelling errors and grammatical errors.
Student entrants, who fulfill the outlined requirements, compete for prizes in the following three categories. All prices will be awarded as travel subsidies up to the amount as stated below.

Important note: Travel subsidies will be awarded for study- or research-related travel. In general, higher education institutions or institutions with a direct link to study or research should be visited with the awarded subsidy. All travel must be completed and costs must be settled with the Department of International Affairs until the end of 2022. Details about billing of travel will be provided after the selection process to the winners. Students must be enrolled at Universität Hamburg at the time of travel.
Selection criteria include:
- Clear argument and link to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities
- Clarity, detail, rationale and academic quality
- International perspective
- Literature and source selection
- Originality and creativity
A selection committee composed of staff, academics and students will determine the winners.
The winners will be announced until the end of the year. Winners will compete for active participation in the Virtual Global Competition with international partners, held on 24 January 2021.
Resources
Academic advisor: All student entrants must identify an academic advisor. The academic advisor, an employee at Universität Hamburg with the status postdoc or higher, helps the student with scientific aspects when creating the poster. Students must identify an advisor independently.
Research Poster Workshop: Universität Hamburg's Universitätskolleg has offered to organize a workshop on research posters, if there is sufficient demand from students. Students, who would like to participate in such a workshop can express their interest under postercompetition-sdg10.pv"AT"uni-hamburg.de until the end of September. The workshop would be held in German. Following the workshop, students will have the opportunity for individual counselling sessions.
Indiana University IT course: Indiana University provides students with the opportunity to join an IT course on creating research posters. Anyone can sign up for an IU guest account and enroll in the course. Follow this link to the course website.
Virtual Global Competition
Parallel to Universität Hamburg's poster competition, Indiana University (USA) and other international partners will hold the same competition with each institution choosing their own winners. After successful completion of the competition, the partner institutions will organize a Virtual Global Competition - an online forum, where all participants are invited to discuss research and ideas realted to SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. Selected winners of each institution will be asked to present their posters.
The Virtual Global Competition is set to take place on 24 January 2021, the International Day of Education.
