Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, updated information
Hamburg International Summer School is going to take place online in July 2021. More information about the program and the application is coming soon.
- I have submitted my application. What happens now?
As soon as all your documents have been uploaded to our application portal, we will forward your application to a selection committee to check all requirements have been met. After the selection committee confirms you are eligible to take part in our program, we will send you a Confirmation of Acceptance. This will also include information on the next steps, and list the amount you need to pay. The selection process may take up to 4 weeks.
- When will I receive more information about the program?
We will send you all the information you need to know about your stay in Hamburg when we send the Confirmation of Acceptance. You will receive the final course timetable and detailed program information 4 weeks before the course begins.
- What do I need to do before I travel?
After receiving confirmation that you will be participating, you should book your flights to and from Germany.
Please make sure that you have taken out sufficient insurance (health, 3-party liability, etc.). If you have decided to book your own accommodation, you should start looking for a room to stay in Hamburg as soon as possible. You can buy a cheap SIM card once you have landed in Germany.
- I come from a non-EU country and I need a letter of invitation to apply for a visa. How can I get this letter?
Indicate that you need a letter of invitation for a visa in our application portal. If you provide your passport number and your date of birth, we can issue a letter of invitation, which we will send to you once we have received payment for the program fees.
- When are my program fees due?
Once we have sent the Confirmation of Acceptance, you have 14 days to transfer the program fees. Unfortunately, we do not have a PayPal account, and we are unable to accept cash transactions on campus.
- What is covered in the program fees?
The program fees include:
- 3 or 4 week program (core and supplementary program)
- language course
- official certificate
- course materials
- public transport ticket
- extracurricular activities such as museum visits, excursions to the harbor and other city sights, day trip to Berlin and to the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, welcome and farewell events
Preparing for your trip
- How do I get to Hamburg? (which airport, train station, etc.)
Hamburg Airport (HAM) is an international airport, which is quite close to the city center, and is the easiest way to get here. The Bremen airport (BRE, approx. 2 hours away) and Berlin airports (SXF and TXL, approx. 3 hours by train) are the next closest airports to Hamburg.
Travelers within Europe may also take the train.
- How do I get to my accommodation from the airport?
There are two options: either take the S-Bahn (light rail) or take a taxi.
As you will not receive your transport ticket until the welcome ceremony on the 6 July, make sure you buy a ticket to get you from the airport to your destination (we recommend buying a single ticket for zones A and B, which costs EUR 3.40). Average price for a taxi ride from the airport to the accommodation we booked for you is EUR 35.00.
- Where can I stay during the Summer School in July?
You can book the Summer School with or without accommodation. For more information about the hotel we use, see the Accommodation page.
- When is accommodation available?
If you book the Summer School program with accommodation, the hotel room will be available for you from 5 July to 25 July 2020 (Health Economics) or until 1 August 2020 (Particles, Strings & Cosmology; Language Diversity). Of course, you may extend your stay at your own expense if you wish. For more information, see the Accommodation page.

Yes, please contact us via email.

We offer a beginner and intermediate course, based on your proficiency. You can indicate your language level in the application portal.
- I am a German native speaker. Do I need to take part in the course?
If you are a native German speaker, then you are not required to take part in this course. We are happy to advise you on the best ways to take advantage of your free mornings during the first week!
- When should I arrive in Hamburg?
You should arrive by the 5 July, and not plan to leave before 25 July (Health Economics) or 1 August (Particles, Strings & Cosmology; Language Diversity). Your accommodation is available between these dates. Of course, you are more than welcome to arrive a few days earlier to explore the city, but you will need to make the relevant arrangements for your accommodation.
- When does the Summer School start?
The Summer School program starts on 6 July at 10 am.
- Where are the lectures held?
We will send you detailed information on our locations in advance, so you can find them easily. If you booked your accommodation through us, we also offer a pick-up service on the first day.
