Internationalization at home
“Internationalization at home” covers all activities at Universität Hamburg of an international nature, whether in research, teaching, administration or daily student life. Internationalization at home aims primarily to give the large majority of students who do not spend time abroad international contacts and to create an international environment in order to strengthen their intercultural skills. Below is a list of some of our major efforts to promote internationalization at Universität Hamburg:
- PIASTA—Intercultural living and learning offers free-time and cultural activities as well as advising for German and international students outside the classroom
- International Welcome Week hosted by PIASTA offers first-year students a rich international and intercultural program
- the Certificate Intercultural Competence (CIC) recognizes and attests to the international and intercultural skills of students and staff
- Universität Hamburg's “Buddy Program” brings German and international students together to provide mutual help and support (Buddy program in the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Science, the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Law)
- increasing number of courses taught in English
- introduction of English-language master's courses to attract more international students
- the possibility to do a doctorate in English, further opening doors at Universität Hamburg to international doctoral researchers
- hiring international academic and administrative staff
- promoting international exchange
