Open Friday BarCamps
Universität Hamburg’s Career Center is a place where people can come together to discuss relevant and exciting topics. We would like to continue with this tradition at a time when our societies are affected by drastic changes and facing countless questions. We would like to include topics and questions that move and concern us all.We would like to initiate interesting conversations that you can continue after the actual event in your own circles.
In our new Open Fridays series, we will hold BarCamps on various topics. Together with participants and hosts, we wish to foster open and active exchange. The BarCamp format is especially suitable, because we want to delve into issues together. Our experience at the Career Center shows that we learn best with and from each other.
Current events:
Rassismus im Bewerbungsverfahren (Racism in application procedures)
At a time when societal racism is gaining more attention, scientific studies and media reports attest to something that Germans who have migrated here and international experts from certain countries have long criticized: people who do not have German-sounding names have worse chances in the local job market. As a rule, they receive many more rejections when they apply for jobs. For example, Muslim women who wear head coverings send more than 4 times as many applications than do female applicants with identical qualifications simply to get an interview.
What challenges do citizens who have migrated to Germany face in the German labor market? What kinds of racism does the labor market conceal? What societal solutions are possible? What political demands need to be met?
This event will take place virtually and in German language.

Aufstiegskompetenzen? Soziale Herkunft und Bildungschancen (Advancement skills? Social background and educational opportunities)
Not all students take university study for granted, and not all students can rely on their family’s own experiences. They are often the first in their family to become familiar with the educational landscape at universities, or their family has experience with educational systems other than Germany’s. How does social background affect educational careers? The familiar values, conventional ways of speaking or expressing yourself, and much more can collide with new, implicit rules and previously unfamiliar conduct, which can make you seem strange or, at the least, feel out of place. For some, these alienating feelings continue as they begin careers and beyond; others do not experience these feelings of strangeness.
What is “educational advancement”? What do we mean by “advancement skills”? Which resources, skills, and strengths develop for the sake of or by virtue of educational advancement?
This joint event between ArbeiterKind.de Hamburg and Universität Hamburg’s Career Center will take place virtually and in German language.

Frauen gründen nachhaltig—Nachhaltigkeit und Gründen geht das zusammen? (Women founding businesses sustainably: Do sustainability and founding a business go together?)
New businesses and start-ups are still often measured by how fast they grow and how much of the market they net. At the same time, many founders are increasingly putting sustainability at the top of their list of goals. Thus, the question often arises as to how one can combine these. How can you manage to found a business sustainably and become competitive so that you can grow quickly? Or do you have to?
Are you thinking about founding a business? Or have you already taken the first steps? Or are you part of a young start-up and interested in sustainability? Then this BarCamp is just right for you.
Together, we want to ask these questions and find answers to questions about sustainability and founding a business.
This joint event from beyoupilot and Universität Hamburg’s Career Center will take place virtually and in German language.
