For the fifth time, Universität Hamburg is awarding the Joseph Carlebach Prize for outstanding academic contributions to Jewish history, religion and culture to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Joseph Carlebach (1883-1942). Joseph Carlebach was the chief rabbi of the Jewish community in Altona (1926-1936) and Hamburg (1936-1941) before his deportation to Riga in 1941.

The prize will be conferred by the University's president, Prof. Dr. Dieter Lenzen, on Monday, 22 April 2013 at 4:30 pm in the Warburg House, Heilwigstr. 116.

Scientists from Universität Hamburg, the USA and South Korea have jointly discovered a chemical process which makes it possible to produce a kind of lightweight plastic from sulfur, which is inexpensive and widely-available. The process, known as "inverse vulcanization," can be used for high-quality batteries found, for example, in electric vehicles.

For the past five years, the project "Women in top research" at the Center for Globalization and Governance at Universität Hamburg has researched numerous institutions funded by the Excellence Initiative. The project took a look at work and life among top-level researchers, the effects of these on equal opportunity and what the Excellence institutions have done to make work equally attractive to women and men.

As part of the city's series "Hamburg remembers: 2013", there will be numerous projects, lectures and exhibitions on the National Socialist putsch 80 years ago, Kristallnacht 75 years ago and, 70 years ago, the Allied air attack on Hamburg in response to National Socialist expansionism.

On 2 April 2013, Ernst Deutsch Theater will once again host a discussion: for the fifth time, members of Universität Hamburg will meet members of the theater's ensemble and talk with audience members about the current production. This time around, Prof. Dr. Joan Kristin Bleicher (professor of literature and media at Universität Hamburg) and President Lenzen will take part in the discussion about the play, "Der Teufel und die Diva" (The Devil and the Diva).

The play is about the eventful life of Hildegard Knef, Germany's last diva. Immediately following her death, she receives a visit by a gentleman by the name of Mephisto, who attempts to take her soul.

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has authorized a new research group under the ageis of Universität Hamburg. The project, "A New Approach toward Improved Estimates of Atlantic Ocean Freshwater Budgets and Transports as Part of the Global Hydrological Cycle,"involves researchers from the fields of oceanogrphay, atmospheric physics and air-water interaction. Other participating institutions include the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, the University of Bremen, the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and the German Weather Service. Spokesperson is Prof. Dr. Detlef Stammer from the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability. The project will run for six years and receive a total of EUR 1.1 million in funding from the German Research Foundation. Researchers aim to analyze variations in the inflow of fresh water into the Atlantic and the consquences of this for the ocean. The Atlantic is considered a key region with regard to global climate activity.

E-books have continued to grow in popularity. More and more readers use modern reading devices. So far, digital versions of print material have been viewed a threat to printed books only. But a new study by the Institute for Marketing and Media at Universität Hamburg reveals that e-book reading devices - especially tablets - pose a threat to other media products, as well.

What are the consequences of climate change in the Arctic and Antarctic? International researchers and experts will discuss this topic in Hamburg from 17 to 23 March 2013. The "25th International Polar Conference" will take place at the KlimaCampus, Universität Hamburg under the title "Changing Polar Regions." Over 170 participants from eleven countries are expected to attend.

Contact studies for older adults (KSE) at Universität Hamburg provide a number of educational opportunities for older adults who don't want to pursue a degree. The Center for University Continuing Studies (AWW)  at Universität Hamburg is offering roughly 300 lecture series and seminars in the summer semester 2013. If you are interested, there are information sessions, campus tours and individual advising opportunities on 13 and 14 March 2013.

Junior Professor Dr. Bernhard Hidding from the Institute for Experimental Physics at Universität Hamburg has been accepted to the German Research Foundation's Emmy Noether Program. The prograam funds outstanding young researchers, allowing them to establish their own research groups and to acquire the skills and qualifications to assume leading academic positions. The new research group will focus on "high-intensive, formable electron rays in the fourth generation and their light sources." The group will receive more than EUR 800,000 in funding. The researchers want to find out how, with the help of electrically-charged gases (plasmas), smaller and more effective particle accelerators can be developed for basic research and other applications.

The number of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, could double in the Baltic Sea in the wake of climate change, according to estimates by researchers at Universität Hamburg's KlimaCampus. "Our findings show that increasing water temperatures don't only mean longer annual phases of growth but also more than twice as much algae bio-mass by the end of the century," said Prof. Inga Hense. Possible consequences: sudden algae growth - unpleasant for tourists and to some extent harmful to health. Furthermore, other kinds of bacteria may flourish, upsetting the ecosystem, since blue-gree algae enriches the surrounding sea water with growth-promoting nitrogen.
