Dear Readers,

Last Friday, our President and Senator Dr. Gundelach agreed to terminate the President's contract, effective at the end of July 8, 2009. Regardless of the criticisms directed at the President's university management, there are gains which have promoted both the University and Hamburg as a major center of knowledge and science.

Let us look to the future and let us contribute together to the University's further development.

In the second half of 2009, our Vice President for Structure and Human Resources Development, Prof. Dr. Gabriele Löschper will assume presidential responsibilities in accordance with rotational procedures.

We received positive news for our university on Friday morning: six applications for the Excellence Cluster and five graduate programs were selected within the framework of the state excellence initiative. A very visible success for our researchers!

Sincerely,

H. Siegfried Stiehl
Vice President for Research,
International Affairs and Information Management
