Doctoral funding

Universities largely employ doctoral students as research associates or in projects that receive external funding, e.g. from the German Research Foundation (DFG) or private enterprises.

Please ask your doctoral supervisior or your departmental spokesperson about your options.

The following four external research organizations head numerous academic institutions:

• Helmholtz Centres and Networks
  
• Max Planck Society
  
• Leibniz Association and
  
• Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.

Universität Hamburg assists young researchers with

• state graduate scholarships and
  
• travel bursaries from University funds.

Doctoral programs may also provide further intergrated funding sources, e.g. through Research Training Groups funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The spectrum of funding sources in Germany is largely defined by the eleven organizations for the promotion of young talent (Begabtenförderungswerke) funded by the federal Ministry of Education and Research. Moreover, various foundations offer subject-specific and interdisciplinary doctoral grants.
