Universität Hamburg's Young Researcher Initiative

StaatsbibliothekLaunched in 2011 Universität Hamburg’s Young Researcher Initiative promotes highly-qualified young academics from Germany and abroad. We give you an opportunity to develop or lead your own research projects at an early stage in your career.

Take your chance!

We are committed to giving you a chance to establish innovative research ideas and teaching approaches that make long-lasting contributions to academic sustainability. The Young Researcher Initiative also enables you to distinguish yourself in your field.

Our initiative targets young scientists and scholars from all subject areas and is open to all topics.

The University aims to:

  • provide you with further qualifications in your field
  • support independent research at an early stage
  • cultivate skills you need to acquire external funding for your research projects
  • broaden your qualification, promote your career development and 
  • expand its research profile.

Four funding lines

Universität Hamburg supports four funding lines for promising research projects. These are to contribute to our researchers’ personal development while also enhancing the University's research profile.


Current calls for young researchers

For the third time, young researchers can submit applications for ten grants to fund their transition to the post-doc phase of their studies (ÜP1).

Application deadline: 8 May 2013

Fellowships for transitioning to the postdoc phase

These fellowships span a year. We seek to support researchers in developing and completing applications for external funding for their own research projects at Universität Hamburg.

This funding line specifically targets excellent young researchers transitioning to the postdoc phase.

Postdoc project funding

The postdoc project funding line currently supports six researchers (salary category EGR 14 TV-L), all pursuing a research project at Universität Hamburg (duration: two years). Our  funding subsequently enables them to apply for external funds building upon their own academic credentials.

Graduate research groups

Furthermore, Universität Hamburg has put out an internal call for small graduate groups. These will span three years and form part of our Junior Researcher Initiative.

Funding aims at interdisciplinary graduate groups that research specific topics. We seek to assist young researchers who have just completed their studies in applying for externally funded doctoral programs. This call targets research areas represented by few, if any, Research Training Groups (e.g. DFG-funded Research Training Groups).

Körber Fund for Young Researchers

The Körber Fund for Young Researchers (funded by the Körber Foundation) targets postdocs at Universität Hamburg who want to organize conferences relevant to their research area.

The University will evaluate the Young Researcher Initiative after the first funding period to decide on its continuation.
