Social Program

Organized Social Program

On the first evening of the congress, we would like to invite you to a Welcome Reception in the city hall of Hamburg (http://english.hamburg.de/attractions-hamburg/293996/city-hall-hamburg-attraction-english.html). (Thursday, March 26th, 7 to 9 p.m.; a bus transfer is arranged.)

On the second night, we will spend a very special evening in the “Hotel Hafen Hamburg” (http://www.hotel-hafen-hamburg.de/default.aspx?lang=en; tickets required): Enjoy a spectacular view over Hamburg Harbour at our Gala Dinner. (Friday, March 27th, start at 8 p.m.; a bus transfer is arranged.) For both events, we kindly ask you to register in advance (please see registration form).

We are organizing a special social program on Saturday afternoon (after the end of the conference). Let us take you to the famous “Speicherstadt” in Hamburg Harbour as well as to the “Hafen City”, Hamburg’s newest and still growing district.

Participants are asked to choose between either a visit to the “International Maritime Museum” including a guided tour in English (www.internationales-maritimes-museum.de) or the “Miniatur Wunderland”, the largest model railway in the world (www.miniatur-wunderland.com). Afterwards, we will meet for a final get-together with coffee and tea.

For this excursion, we are also asking you for advance reservation.

Restaurants

There is a great number of restaurants, cafes and bistros around the university as well as in the city offering local and/or all kinds of international food. Usually, lunch as well as dinner is served. The waterfront area (train stations “Landungsbrücken” and “Baumwall”) is typically known for its Portuguese and Spanish restaurants, whose specialities are fish and seafood dishes. In case you need any recommendations, you may either visit http://www.hamburg-tourism.de/en/themes-tours/eating-drinking/ or please ask us, beforehand or on site!

Shopping

The main shopping area is certainly the Jungfernstieg right at the southern end of the smaller Alster Lake and its surrounding streets like Große Bleichen, Neuer Wall and Gerhofstraße. Here you will find exquisite boutiques and jewelers as well as perfumeries and lovely cafés such as the “Alex” (Alsterpavillion). Here you will also come across famous shopping malls such as the “Alsterhaus” and the “Europa Passage”. A continuation of the interesting and varied assortment of stores and malls you can find at the Mönckebergstraße, which is within walking distance.
