About this page

The explanations for planning and organizing THEs and of the relevant examination laws are originally based on a handout from the Academic Office of the WiSo Faculty. Although every effort has been made to provide general information on this page, certain regulations and conditions described here may differ from those of other faculties or be inapplicable to specific cases. This page is an operative aid rather than an official provision, information, or piece of legal advice.

Alongside conceptual and legal information, it also includes recommendations for the didactic and technical implementation of THEs, which have been taken from the eLearning network.

Update

19 January 2021: The introduction has been revised in accordance with University leadership instructions. In particular, a distinction has been made between supervised written examinations taken in a digital format and take-home exams. The latter is a form of open-book examination and must not be mistaken for a supervised electronic written examination as per examination laws.

18 January 2021: Section 31: Quality Management and Legal Affairs has revised large parts of the section on examination laws.

18 January 2021: Design / What is a take-home exam: Comprehensive revisions in coordination with Section 31 and the faculty representatives in the academic offices.

18 January 2021: Technical implementation / OpenOlat / Access for examinees registered in STiNE: In addition to the process of obtaining student ID numbers and importing members into OpenOlat for lecturers, the section now also describes the process for academic office employees.

15 January 2021: Technical implementation / OpenOlat / Course element: “Test”: The section “Enable free navigation”, which emphasized that examinees had to be able to complete their assignments in any order, was deleted. This is due to contradicting insights gained during discussions with experienced specialists on examination laws. In order to prevent cheating, lecturers may require their students to complete the assignments in a specific order. Please bear in mind that this does not currently constitute a final nor official decision from the Executive University Board.

14 January 2021: Technical implementation / OpenOlat / various parts: In a marked change, the section now recommends granting (read-only) access to the element containing the THE for more than 24 hours past the end of the completion period. This is due to legal considerations.

13 January 2021: Planning / Didactic aspects: Further tips were added to guide assessment of higher skill levels with multiple-choice exercises and how to require students to apply their knowledge in order to answer the questions correctly.
