Program description
Mathematics and physics are closely related. On the one hand, mathematics provides the methods for investigating certain problems in physics. On the other hand, increasingly complex physical theories, such as quantum mechanics or string theory, significantly affect the development of new mathematical theories. This international program in mathematical physics is interdisciplinary, allowing students to expand upon their math skills and work in a research team. Students can focus on either math or physics. This English-language program is offered jointly by the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Physics.
Career prospects
Graduates are qualified to work in industrial and administrative fields or in research. Interdisciplinary skills in mathematics and physics are in high demand on the labor market, e.g., in basic research, IT, and the financial sector.
Program structure
This four-semester program is divided into two phases. First year courses deepen knowledge of math and physics. In the second year, students choose a research topic, prepare a project, and complete a master's thesis.
In the research phase of the program, students cooperate closely in a research group in either the Department of Mathematics or the Department of Physics (the German Electron Synchrotron or DESY).
