University entry qualification following successful advanced studies exam

The following advanced studies exams are recognized for admission to first-degree programs in accordance with § 37 (1) of the HmbHG:

• Meister (master craftsmen and women in accordance with the regulations for their specific craft)
  
• business administrators or people with equivalent advanced studies certificates (in accordance with §§ 53, 54 of the Vocational Training Act or §§ 42, 42a of the Crafts regulations providing that previous coursework comprises a minimum of 400 instruction hours)
  
• professionals qualified in accordance with the Ship's Officer Training Regulations
  
• Professionals with degrees from vocational colleges in accordance with § 24 (2) of the Hamburg School Act as well as equivalent recognized qualifications (these include vocational schools or advanced study programs which require relevant vocational training. In this case, a transcript with the following sentence must be submitted: "The certificate issued by this institution adheres to the framework agreement on vocational colleges" (currently valid resolution passed by the Standing Conference of Ministers) and is recognized by all states in the Federal Republic of Germany.").
  Please make sure that your transcript contains this sentence! If it does not, your degree will not be recognized!
  

The list of recognized advanced study exams can be found at the link to the right. if you cannot find your exam in the list, it does not qualify you for entry to an institution of higher education or enable you to apply to an academic program. In some cases, you may be able to take an university entrance exam.

Please note the following if you want to succeed in the application process at Universität Hamburg. You must:

1. apply online.
   
2. submit proof that you have passed the advanced study exam (uncertified copy of final exam results) as well as a print version of your electronically submitted online application; written proof that you have attended subject advising (proof can be submitted at a later date; it does not need to be submitted upon application. If you are admitted, it must be submitted at the latest upon enrollment).*

within the application period (1 June to 15 July for a winter semester, 1 December to 15 January for a summer semester).

Proof that you have successfully completed an advanced study exam must be submitted in the form of a final exam transcript (a certificate is not sufficient) and the results of the exam must be presented as an average overall grade in decimal form. If the transcript does not contain the average grade, the chamber or comparable advanced study institution can issue an additional certificate. This certificate must also be submitted.
If the certificate contains a grade based on a point system rather than in decimal form, the result will be converted by Universität Hamburg. In order to this, a conversion key from the issuing institution needs to be included in the application. If this is not included, the University will convert the grade in accordance with § 9 of the UniZS. You can find the resulting conversion table here.

If the advanced study certificate also contains a grade for an advanced technical qualification, please note that this is NOT sufficient! The grade must refer to the advanced study exam.

When you apply online, please put in "Meisterprüfung" under "Art der Hochschulzugangsberechtigung." The date of the higher education entry qualification is 15 July 2010 if you passed your advanced study exam before this date. If you passed your exam after this date, the date of your exam is valid. The German federal state ("Land") and district ("Kreis") of your higher education qualification likewise correspond to those of your exam, as does the grade.

Please note that if you do not submit proof with an appropriate grade (in decimal form), you will be ranked behind the last applicant with a grade in decimal form.

Please note that Universität Hamburg does not inform applicants if information is missing nor does it issue reminders throughout the application and admission process. If your documents do not meet the requirements or if you fail to submit documents, we will no longer consider your application and we will not inform you.

If you are admitted, you will need to submit authorized copies of your documents. The documents which you submit during the application period do not need to be certified.

As mentioned above, you must submit your documents when you enroll - this time in authorized form.

Furthermore, you must prove that you have received subject advising - at the latest upon enrollment. This means that you have spoken to a subject advisor in the program of your choice at Universität Hamburg. You can find the responsible institutions here.
