The show collection, both of permanent and temporary exhibits, is housed on 2000 qm of the ground floor of the building.
A large part of this area is devoted to German invertebrates and vertebrates (especially birds and mammals), each animal being provided with a short information on its biology and occurrence. The evolution of the Artiodactyles (even-toed hooved animals) and horses is touched upon, as are convergent and divergent evolution as illustrated by animals which feed on ants and termites.
The subject of whales, with expertly mounted skeletons of a sperm, minke and pilot whale, as well as that of an orca, occupies a considerable space of the exhibition area. Here can also be seen the only whale that can be considered to be truely German, namely the Porpoise. The species is shown as a group consisting of several skeletons "swimming“ together with a number of whole animals. Throughout the exhibition reference is made to the endangerment of many of the species shown.
