Awards and Honors 2008


Faculty of Medicine

  • Prof. Dr. Rainer Thomasius, Medical Director of the German Center for Addiction Research in Childhood and Adolescence (DZSKJ) at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, has received the Lucie-von-Wehren Award of the "LsD Foundation: Life instead of Drugs". Thomasius was awarded for his successful work in addiction prevention and treatment of children and adolescents. Prof. Dr. Thomasius has located promising paths in prevention research and has developed effective therapeutic approaches to the treatment of addicted children and adolescents.
  • Priv.-Doz. Dr. Ulrike Wedegärtner, Diagonistic and Interventional Radiology Department and Clinic, has received the  "Coolidge Award" for her work determining in-utero fetal oxygenation. The 15,000 Euro award has been split with another winner.
  • Dr. Rainer Kiefmann, Department of Anesthiology at the UKE, has received the Heinrich Dräger-Preis for Intensive Medicine for his research on hypoxy (oxygen deficiency) which can accompany lung or heart ailments. The 15,000 Euro award is being shared with another recipient.
  • Haefaa Alchalby, Syrian guest professor in the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit, has received an "EBMT-AMGEN Fellowship Award" from the "European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation" (EBMT)  funded by the bio-technology enterprise AMGEN. The 35,000 Euro award will enable Dr. Alchalby to continue her research on a specific form of Leukemia (myelo-fibrosis) for another year at the UKE.
  • Dr. Wolf Hassenpflug, Department of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology, has received the 1400 dollar "2008 AACR Pezcoller Foundation Scholar-in-Training Award" from the "American Association for Cancer Research" (AACR, which is funded by the Italian "Pezcoller Foundation." The award was granted for his work on osteo-sarcomas.
  • Dr. Thomas Rostock, Department of Cardiology, has received the 6,000 euro Woldemar-Mobitz-Forschungspreis from the "German Cardiac Society". The award was granted was his work on the most common heart disturbance, auricular fibrillation.
  • Priv.-Doz. Dr. Stephan Baldus, Department of Cardiology, has received the 5,200 euro Albert-Fraenkel-Award from the German Cardiac Society. The award was granted for his work on the origins of acute illnesses of the coronary arteries.
  • Priv.-Doz. Dr. Reinhard Lindner, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, has received the 10,000 euro Heigl Award 2008 from the Heigle Foundation. The award was granted for his work on psychoanalytically-oriented pyschotherapy for suicidal patients.
  • Prof. Dr. Dieter Naber and Priv.-Doz. Dr. Martin Lambert, Dept. of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, have received the First Prize of 6,500 euros from the Lilly Quality of Life Preis 2007. The award was granted for their work on the subjective quality of life of schizophrenic patients undergoing neuroleptic treatment.
  • Dr. Anja Mehnert, Dept. of Medical Psychology, received the Rehabilitationswissenschaftlichen Förderpreis der Karlsruher Sanatorium AG at the Rehabilitation Science Colloqium 2008. The prize was awarded for her research on the effectivness of stationary oncological rehabilitation. She will share the 7,500 euros with another recipient.
  • Priv.-Doz. Dr. Ulf Panzer, III. Dept. of Internal Medicine at the UKE Hamburg-Eppendorf, has received the 7,000 euro Dr.-Martini-Preis. The award was granted for his investigation into the development of inflammatory diseases of the kidney.
  • Dr. Djordje Atanackovic, II. Dept. of Internal Medicine, has received the 5,000 euro Research Prize by the "Stiftung Tumorforschung Kopf-Hals" (Foundation for Head and Neck Cancer Research). The award was granted for an important advance in research on the path towards a vaccination against head and neck cancer.
  • Dr. med. Ralf A. Benndorf and Dr. rer. nat. Edzard Schwedhelm, Institute of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, have received the 5,000 euro Dieter-Klaus-Förderpreis für die Hochdruckforschung (prize for high blood pressure research) from the German High Blood Pressure League/German Hypertension Society. The award was granted for the discovery of processes in the development of cardiovascular diseases.

Faculty of Law

  • Dr. Sebastian Mock has received the Prix Pierre Coppens prize for his doctoral thesis "The Financial Constitution of Corporations and International Accounting" mentored by Prof. Dr. Heribert Hirte in the Seminar for Trade, Shipping and Corporate Law. The 15,000 euro "Prix Pierre Coppens" is awarded every three years by the Belgian "Université catholique de Louvain Faculté de droit" for work on European and international corporate law.

Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences

  • Prof. Dr. h.c. Manfred Lahnstein, Chairman of the ZEIT Foundation of Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius, received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences for his academic achievements. The award ceremony for the rerum politicarum honoris causa took place on March 31, 2008.
  • Prof. Dr. Rolf v. Lüde, Institute for Sociology in the Department of Social Sciences, was appointed in 2008 to the renowned Chaire Alfred Grosser at Science Po Paris for the summer semester 2009. The "Institut d'Études Politiques Paris" belongs to the French Grandes Écoles and spezializes in the training of social scientists. The Grandes Écoles is considered an extraordinary institution in the French university system and has traditionally educated the French leadership to assume positions of responsibility in the public and private sectors.

Faculty of Education, Psychology and Human Movement

Department of Education
  • The He College of Ophthalmology and Visual Science in Shenyang, China, has named Prof. Dr. Sven Degenhardt, special needs instructor in the Department of Education, an Honorary Professor. The College for the Treatment of Eye Disorders and Visual Sciences honors above all Dr. Degenhardt's achievements in the development of an interdisciplinary network in the field of vision rehabilitation in China. This is Sven Degenhardt's second Chinese honorary professorship. In 2006, he was elected as honorary professor at the Nanjing Technical College of Special Education.
  • Frau Prof. Dr. Ingrid Gogolin, Institute for International and Intercultural Comparative Education, was elected to an office term of four years in the academic council of the German Institute for International Teaching Research (DIPF).

Faculty of Humanities

  • Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Wolf Schmid from the Institute of Slavic Studies at the University of Hamburg was awarded the Puschkin Medal by the President of the Russian Federation for his work in culture, the humanities, art and literature. The award recognizes the recipient's decades-long committment to the study and dissemination of Russian literature, language and culture. Prof. Wolf Schmid accepted the award on January 14th, 2008 in the Consulate of the Russian Federation in Hamburg.
  • In the national competition for the title "Professor of the Year 2008" held by the magazine UNICUM BERUF, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Pörksen from the Institute for Journalism and Communications at the University of Hamburg placed 1st in the category "Humanities and the Social and Cultural Sciences." The jury recognized his committment to the promotion of ties between academic education and practical career qualifications.
  • Prof. Dr. Dieter Möhn, tenured professor at the Institute for German Literature I at the University of Hamburg, received the "Austrian Honorary Cross for Science and Art, First Class".
  • Prof. Dr. Jürgen Meier received the Quickborn-Prize of the Lower Saxony Bank Foundation for his work on low German. Under his supervision, the "Hamburg Dictionary" was completed and published in 2008. During his field work, Meier inspired enthusiasm among a great many people for lower German.  Until his retirement, Prof. Meier was a professor in the German Seminar. The €2,000 Quickborn Prize is awarded every two years.

Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences

Department of Biology

  • Prof. Dr. Angelika Brandt, Head of the Zoological Museum at the University of Hamburg, received the "SCAR Medal for Excellence in Polar Sciences" for her research in the field of antarctic studies. This award from the "Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research" (SCAR), the world's largest organization for research in the Antarctic and the South Pole Seas was given for the second time.
  • Against the backdrop of the 60th anniversary of the University of Transilvania and the Faculty of Forestry in Brasov, Rumania,Prof. Dr. Arno Frühwald was granted an honorary professorship at the University of Transilvania. Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Ioan Abrudan praised the Prof. Frühwald's work in research and teaching in the field of forestry and forest economics around the world.

Department of Chemistry

  • Prof. Dr. Walter Kaminsky, Institute for Technical and Macromolecular Chemistry, has received an honorary professorhsip from the East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai for his extraordinary scholarship. The Hamburg native already received an honorary professorship from the Zhejiang University in China in 1998 and has several other academic awards.
  • The Department of Chemistry and the Friends and Funding Association of Chemistry at the University of Hamburg e.V. have given prizes totalling 6,000 euros for the best Vordiplome, Diplome, exams and doctoral theses. Dr. Nicolas Böge, Dr. Stefanie Derlin, Dr. Carola Funk, Dr. Silke Wendicke and Dr. Jörn Wochnowski each received 1,000 euros for the best doctoral theses.  Dipl.-Chem. Benjamin Woldt and food-stuffs technician Jan-Hinnerk Jarck each received 400 euros for the best Diplome. Annette Lorenz and Valentina Hernberg were awarded fro the best state exam results in Pharmacy.

Department Geowissenschaften

  • Der Hamburger Meeresforscher Prof. Dr. Werner Alpers erhielt am 28. September in der „Großen Halle des Volkes“ am Platz des Himmlischen Friedens in Peking den diesjährigen Nationalen Freundschaftspreis der Volksrepublik China. Der „Nationalen Freundschaftspreis“ ist die höchste Auszeichnung für ausländische Staatsbürger, die die VR China vergibt, um ausländische Experten für ihren Beitrag und Einsatz für den wirtschaftlichen Aufbau und die kulturelle Entwicklung Chinas zu loben.
  • Der Geowissenschaftler Prof. Dr. Gero Hillmer wurde zum Ehrenbürger des brasilianischen Bundeslandes Ceara ernannt. Er erhielt diese Auszeichnung für sein Engagement bei der Einrichtung eines UNESCO Geoparkes in der Naturlandschaft Chapa do Araripe.

Department Informatik

  • Yaniv Schwerin, Informatik-Student, hat aufgrund seiner herausragenden Leistungen im Bereich „Datenbanktechnologie für komplexe Informationssysteme“ das erstmals vergebene Stipendium „Versant Advanced Database Scholarship“ erhalten.
  • Benjamin Teuber, Stipendiat der Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, hat für das beste Vordiplom des Jahres 2007 den Preis der Firma Sun Microsystems erhalten.

Department Physik

  • Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Albrecht Wagner, Physiker und Direktor des Deutschen Elektronen Synchrotrons (DESY), wurde zum neuen Vorsitzenden des Hochschulrats der Universität Hamburg gewählt.

Weitere Auszeichnungen und Preise

  • Dr. K. Klaus Krämer, Träger des Bundesverdienstkreuzes Erster Klasse und anderer hoher Auszeichnungen, erhielt im Mai 2008 von Universitätspräsidentin Prof. Dr. Ing.-habil. Monika Auweter-Kurtz die Universitätsmedaille in Bronze.
  • Eckart Krause hat anlässlich seiner Verabschiedung in den Ruhestand die Universitätsmedaille in Silber erhalten. Die Universität Hamburg würdigt damit seine herausragenden Verdienste beim Aufbau der Hamburger Bibliothek für Universitätsgeschichte. Die Universitätsmedaille in Silber ist die höchste Auszeichnung, die die Universität an Universitätsmitglieder vergibt.
  • Eckart Krause und Privatdozent Dr. Rainer Nicolaysen haben für die Geschichtsaufarbeitung der Universität Hamburg den Hamburger Max-Brauer-Preis der Alfred Toepfer Stiftung F.V.S. erhalten. Mit großer Beharrlichkeit hat Eckart Krause über ein Vierteljahrhundert die „Hamburger Bibliothek für Universitätsgeschichte“ aufgebaut, Rainer Nicolaysen hat diesen Prozess mit eigener Forschung seit langem begleitet. Der Preis ist mit 15.000 Euro dotiert.
  • Die Ehrensenatorin der Universität Hamburg, Prof. Dr. Miriam Gillis-Carlebach, hat am 9. Dezember 2008 in der deutschen Botschaft in Tel Aviv das Bundesverdienstkreuz erhalten. Miriam Gillis-Carlebach wurde damit für ihre langjährigen Verdienste zur Förderung der deutsch-israelischen Wissenschaftsbeziehungen geehrt.
  • Die Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung hat am 3. März 2008 zum 13. Mal den Kurt-Hartwig-Siemers-Wissenschaftspreis für außergewöhnliche wissenschaftliche Leistungen verliehen. Der mit 21.000 Euro dotierte Preis ging an die vier Nachwuchswissenschaflter/innen: PD Dr. Burcu Dogramaci (36), Lehrbeauftragte am Kunstgeschichtlichen Seminar, für ihre Habilitationsschrift „Die nächste Generation – Wirken und Einfluss deutschsprachiger Architekten, Stadtplaner, Bildhauer und Kunsthistoriker in der Türkei (1927–1973)“. Charlotte Köckert (33), inzwischen wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, für ihre Dissertation „Christliche Kosmologie und antike Naturphilosophie“. Dr. Patrick C. Leyens (33), LL. M. (London), Juniorprofessor für Zivilrecht an der Universität Hamburg und Habilitant am Max-Planck-Institut für ausländisches und internationales Privatrech, für seine Dissertation „Information des Aufsichtsrats – Ökonomisch-funktionale Analyse und Rechtsvergleich zum englischen Board“. Julia Schneider (31), Kunstgeschichtliches Seminar, für ihre Magisterarbeit über „Erwin Panofsky und die Diskussion um die kunstwissenschaftlichen Grundbegriffe“.
  • Der Frauenförderpreis der Universität Hamburg, der am 3. Juli 2008 zum 12. Mal verliehen wurde, ging an die „UniEltern“. Daniela Kock, Kathrin Kompisch und Iluta Adam werden die Auszeichnung entgegennehmen. Der mit 10.000 Euro dotierte Preis wird für herausragendes und nachhaltiges Engagement für Frauenförderung an der Universität Hamburg verliehen.
