Fascinating, Terrible, Evil

In the course series "Fascinating, Terrible, Evil," the Master degree program Information Science and Management at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences attempts to answer the question: How does film successfully create the terrible and terrifying? To plumb the question further, seven horror classics will be shown in the Metropolis Cinema over a three-month period. Event managers heartily welcome the students of other universities.

Placement Tests for Subject-Specific Language Courses

Science Slam Registration for the new FSZ language courses in winter semester 2009/2010 will take place on Friday, October 16th from 9 am to 7 pm in the VMP 5 rooms 76b and 78.
PLEASE NOTE: Students who have not yet been placed must take the placement test on October 12th in the ESA 1 lecture hall (English at 5 pm, Spanish, French, Italian and Russian at 6:30 pm). The courses are free for students of the University of Hamburg.
The FSZ offers language courses for students with previous knowledge (starting at level B2) in three core areas: subject-related language skills, intercultural competence and preparation for travel abroad and careers. More ….

German Rectors' Conference Begins Internet Forum for Students

In May of 2009, the German Rector's Conference started an internet forum for students. They have the opportunity to discuss such topics as general studying conditions, Bologna reform and admissions, among others. Second Hamburg Science Slam - Seeking Participants!

Science SlamThe second Science Slam will take place on September 4th in Haus III&70!
The Science Slam, likes its progenitor, the Poetry Slam, is a competition in the form of talks. But instead of original writing, the participants present original research results. The audience constiutes the jury and determines the first-place prizewinner in the Hamburg Science Slam at the end of the evening. The scientific value of the work is not the primary factor in judging. An informative, entertaining presentation of the topic, whether in the natural sciences, the humanities or medicine, is far more important. More ….

Fellowships from the Graduate School "Media and Communication"
(July 16, 2009)

This winter semester, the doctoral program of the Graduate School "Media and Communication" will begin at the University of Hamburg.
The school serves as the patron for the interdisciplinary doctoral program for the Research Center for Media and Communication (RCMC). Within the framework of the Landesexzellenzinitiative (State Excellence Initiative) the Graduate School is already offering for the winter semester 2009/2010 10 partial fellowships of a monthly 800 euro each. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research's initiative "BIOTechnikum. Researching Life - Structuring the Future", sponsored by Minister President Peter Harry Carstensen and the Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg Ole von Beust, provides information on research in modern biotechnology in Germany. The truck with a completely equipped laboratory and exhibition modules will be at the Jakobikirchhof in Hamburg and will offer visitors an exciting look at the fascinating world of life sciences. Seeking Participants for Pilot Study

„What is mine, is also yours“? – an online questionnaire to analyze the role of everyday social relationships. Doctoral candidates in organizational and economic psychology at the Ludwig Maximillian University in Munich are examining the effect of social orientation in economic decision-making situtations in the pilot study "Social Orientation and Economic Decisions" and are looking for participants. The Federal Ministry of the Interior announced a contest for students in all fields of study on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of reunification on the topic "Celebrating Freedom and Unity. What Holds us Together - Germany in the 21st Century". Contest proposals can be made in the following categories: essay/reportage or photography. in both categories first, second and third prizes totalling 2500 euros, 1,500 euros and 1,000 euros will be given. Law for Protection from the Dangers of Passive Smoking in Public

The Law for Protection from the Dangers of Passive Smoking in Public went into effect on January 1, 2008. Paragraph 2, section 1, number 6 of this law states that smoking in universities, adult education centers and all other educational institutions (in buildings and other completely closed rooms) is forbidden. To implement this law, the President and both staff representatives signed a respective service agreement to protect non-smokers and encourage no smoking at the UHH.

Living Learning Locations: Student Competition

The German Initiative for Network Information e.V., (DINI), calls on students in the departments of architecture/interior design, informatics/information and library science, education/communication and media science to take part in the contest "Living Learning Locations". This is a search for innovative concepts for the designing of learning environments which take into consideration the development of eLeaning and facilitate a conectional utilization of digital and analog media. STiNE Registration Phase Changed

The University and information experts have taken various steps to ensure the high performance effectiveness of STiNE. This includes optimizing the software to raise performance and utilizing new, more efficient hardware. These measures should help ensure system stability in the registration phase. Unfortunately the delivery of the hardware has been delayed. In order to sufficiently test the equipment before use, it has been decided, in agreement with the Vice-Deans for Studies and Teaching, to postpone the beginning of registration for classes.
The new period for the general first registration phase for summer semester 2009 will begin on Monday, March 2, at 12:00 p.m. and end on Friday, March 20, at 3:00 p.m.

Go to Eastern Europe as a Cultural Manager: A Robert Bosch Foundation Grant

If you would like to act as a cultural agent in educational and cultural institutions in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe after graduating, you can now apply for a grant from the Robert Bosch Foundation. Since 2002, cultural managers have been conveying an up-to-date picture of Germany in innovative projects and qualifying themselves in regular advanced training sessions to become young leaders for international cultural exchange. Change to Bachelor and Master

Photo: EU flagBy 2010 all European are supposed to have changed to the Bachelor-Master system. This resolution was passed by the European Ministers of Education in Bologna in 1999. The University of Hamburg is planning to change all its courses of study and replace its Diplom and Magister degrees with a Bachelor as a first and a Master as a second degree. Journal 360° Wins the German Student Services Prize and is Looking for New Coworkers at the University of Hamburg

The student Journal 360° for Politics and Society has won the national contest "Students for Students". The award was offered by German Student Services and the Federal Ministry for Education and Research to seek out innovative and convincing voluntary projects. Altogether over 200 student or student group projects were nominated, six of which, besides the 360° project, were recognized.
In addition, the University of Hamburg journal group is looking for new coworkers for   work in editing, PR and marketing. They are expressly seeking students from all areas of study. A meeting for interested parties will take place on January 15, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in the Mathildebar (Bornstraße 16, near Abaton Kino). More ...

Tuition Information

After the Federal Constitutional Court declared the prohibition of tuition unconstitutional on January 26, 2005, Hamburg planned to institute these study fees. The Ministry of Science and Health presented a bill on December 20, 2005. Starting in 2006, Hamburg made it possible for institutions of higher education to charge tuition amounting to a maximum of 500 euros per semester. The income from the fees is being used by the universities to improve teaching and study conditions. More...

Contest for Young Researchers: Körber Foundation's German Study Award Announced

Entries for the German Study Award may still be submitted by young academics until March 1, 2009. With this prize the Körber Foundation recognizes outstanding research projects which are particularly beneficial to society. The three best contributions receive prizes totalling 30,000 euros each. The German Study Award is one of the highest-endowed prizes for young German scholars. Reserachers who earned dissertations in 2008 with grades of excellent may participate.  More ...

The newly established successor to the Joachim Jungius Society of Sciences, Hamburg,  Joachim Jungius-Stiftung der Wissenschaften zu Hamburg (Joachim Jungius Foundation of Sciences in Hamburg), as its first promotional activity, announces the Joachim Jungius Prize 2009 which would provide funding for a young academic for an outstanding paper on a topic from the research field distributive justice.
