Hamburg Teaching Award Announced

For the first time, the Hamburg Award for Teaching in 2008 has been announced. The prize, financed by the Ministry of Science and Research, will be awarded annually for outstanding, innovative teaching performance at Hamburg schools of higher education. The awards totalling 10,000 euros each will be given to each faculty.
Starting now, students may submit nominations for this recognition. Nominations may be made for teachers who have distinguished themselves by outstanding and innovative teaching performance or for outstanding individual classes taught by several instructors. Nominations must be substantiated and must contain a detailed description of the performance to be recognized. The "Agreement on the Annual Awarding of the Hamburg Teaching Award" offeres ideas on the basic critera to be considered, of which several should be fulfilled if possible. More ...

University of Hamburg's Women's Promotion Award 2009

The University of Hamburg will confer the Women's Promotion Award for the thirteenth time. The 10,000-euro prize is awarded to individual members, groups of members or organizational units of the University whose outstanding commitment to promoting women at the University of Hamburg has been a strong influence. Information Program: "General Information for International Potential Students"

A weekly general information program for international potential students will begin on Monday, November 24, 2008. The invitation is extended to people from EU and non-EU countries who are interested in studying at the University of Hamburg.
We will help you to find the right contacts at the University to answer the following questions:  
  • How do I apply? 
  • Which degrees are recognized? 
  • How good does my German have to be? 
  • Where can I find housing? etc. 
The information sessions will take place Mondays at 9:30 a.m. in the Department of International Affairs, Rothenbaumchaussee 36, Room 8 (ground floor). 

Student Parliament Elections

Although chiefly an award for academic excellence, the prize is also an acknowledgement of remarkable social or cultural engagement on the part of an international student, preferably selected from among the circle of those who have reached an advanced stage in their studies. Those who have recently taken their final exams as well as doctoral students can also be put forward. Proposals for 2008 can be submitted by 1st October. More...

Law for Protection from the Dangers of Passive Smoking in Public

The Law for Protection from the Dangers of Passive Smoking in Public went into effect on January 1, 2008. Paragraph 2, section 1, number 6 of this law states that smoking in universities, adult education centers and all other educational institutions (in buildings and other completely closed rooms) is forbidden. To implement this law, the President and both staff representatives signed a respective service agreement to protect non-smokers and encourage no smoking at the UHH.

Election to the Academic Senate - Winter Semester 2007/08

The elections to the Academic Senate take place for all status groups in the winter semester of 2007/08.
  • Submit election proposals - if you yourself would like to become a candidate - by November 15, 2007 to the Election Office.
  • Send your vote (only by mail) to the Election Office by January 18, 2008, 2:00 p.m.

Technical Language Center of the University of Hamburg for Students in all Faculties (free of charge!)

Logo FachsprachenzentrumTechnical and subject-related language courses (English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish) with performance points for many courses of study, electives, general career competencies, technical foreign language certificates and addition qualifications. The Technical Language Center is an interdisciplinary academic institution of the University of Hamburg. Tuition Information

After the Federal Constitutional Court declared the prohibition of tuition unconstitutional on January 26, 2005, Hamburg planned to institute these study fees. The Ministry of Science and Health presented a bill on December 20, 2005. Starting in 2006, Hamburg made it possible for institutions of higher education to charge tuition amounting to a maximum of 500 euros per semester. The income from the fees is being used by the universities to improve teaching and study conditions. More...

Change to Bachelor and Master

Photo: EU flagBy 2010 all European are supposed to have changed to the Bachelor-Master system. This resolution was passed by the European ministers of education in Bologna in 1999. The University of Hamburg is planning to change all its courses of study and replace its Diplom and Magister degrees with a Bachelor as a first and a Master as a second degree. Departments Reorganized into Faculties

Photo: Faculty of LawSince summer semester of 2005, the 18 departments which comprised the University of Hamburg have been reorganized into six faculties. These faculties will be the main institutions carrying out the academic duties in their fields, fulfilling their teaching, research and development responsibilities with a high degree of autonomy. The decision to reorganize was based on suggestions from the universitites and the recommendations of the Dohnanyi Commission.
