Welcome to the homepage of the General Languages of the University of Hamburg.
By order of the University of Hamburg the Hamburger Volkshochschule offers courses in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Low German, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Latin, Turkish and German as a Foreign Language. In all courses general language skills are taught.
In consequence of the abolition of tuition fees the means of compensation are not sufficient to finance all language courses in full. Therefore the students of the University of Hamburg are to pay a low course fee (except for German courses) starting from the winter term 2012/2013. In the future we will charge a proportionate course fee of 15 euros per semester hour per week (SWS) whereas the University still continues bearing the major part of the course fee. For example, for a course with 2 semester hours per week the course fee amounts to 30 euros for the student of the University of Hamburg.
The language courses are offered at three different levels from A1 to B1. Furthermore the courses are following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) developed by the European Council. From the B2 level the "Fachsprachenzentrum" organizes special language courses.
The classes are designed for 2 to 4 semester hours per week (SWS) plus a self-directed work with the learning platform SprachCommSy and culminate in an exam. The credit in the elective area is possible.
