Dr. Lenzen New President of the University of Hamburg

Letter from the University Management to the Members of the University of Hamburg

Dear colleagues, employees and students of the University of Hamburg,

Today, after concluding negotiations with the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Dr. Lenzen accepted the position of President of our University.

We are delighted with this decision and we are also convinced that our University will continue to develop positively under his leadership. In Mr. Lenzen, the University has attracted someone who, both as a scholar and President of the FU Berlin, can look back upon extensive and compelling experience and achievements. A few of his views on urgent university policy issues have already been made public. Soon we will also have an opportunity to learn more about these and other views.

We are looking forward to the further pursuit of all that has been achieved in the past several years as well as to the future President's ideas. We have had a stressful and turbulent time. We thank you for the extraordinary work you have done for the University in the face of these difficulties and ask you to keep playing an active role in forming the future of our University. In his statement, Dr. Lenzen said, "The University of Hamburg is a very good university." We heartily agree.

Dr. Lenzen will assume the Presidency in spring 2010. Until then, Dr. Gabriele Löschper will remain Acting Deputy Vice-President of the University of Hamburg.
