Commemorating the 65th Anniversary of the Death of Hans Leipelt, Killed by the National Socialists

On 29 January 1945, Hans Leipelt, former student of our university, was executed in Stadelneim, Munich at the age of 23. In memory of Leipelt, Vice President Holger Fischer, former President Dr. Peter Fischer Appelt and the Student Council will lay flowers in front of the commemorative plaque in the entrance hall of the Audimax.

Following the incarceration of the Scholl siblings, Hans Leipelt and his fiancé Marie-Luise Jahn copied and distributed throughout Hamburg the 6th flyer of the White Rose. He also secretely collected money for the widow of Dr. Huber, who had authored the flyer and was executed on 13 July 1943.

On 8 October 1943, Hans Leipelt was imprisoned and on 13 October 1941 sentenced to death by the People's Court for high treason, undermining military morale and aiding the enemy.

In 1940, Leipelt began to study chemistry in Hamburg. After he was forced to leave the university due to his half-Jewish origins, he pursued his studies in Munich. Since 2003, there has been a "Stolperstein" (tripping stone) in Wilhelmsburg, Hamburg in his memory.

On 22 April 2010, "Stolpersteine" (tripping stones) will be set into the sidewalk in front of the University's main building in memory of Hans Leipelt and 10 other members of the University of Hamburg murdered under National Socialism.
