Cast Off for SHIPS: Hamburg Scientists on the Lookout for Hidden Photons - With a Sealed Telescope

At the Hamburger Sternwarte the experiment SHIPS is breaking in a new era of astronomic observation: the search for hidden photons. Until now this class of elementary particles - potentially of fundamental physical and astrophysical importance - has been the subject of little research. Hidden photons are thought to be responsible for puzzling phenomena in the universe and might even be one of the components of the very mysterious dark matter. Students Research the Starry Sky Above Mallorca: Festive Inauguration of Telescope

Students of astronomy and astrophysics at the Hamburger Sternwarte at Universität Hamburg are now able to observe the stars above Mallorca. The University recently began operating a teaching and training telescope on the island that, following a successful test phase, will be festively inaugurated on 28 October at 5 p.m. Computers located in a specially constructed observer room in the Sternwarte precinct in Hamburg-Bergedorf steer the telescope. WOCE Atlas of Atlantic Ocean Complete

Scientists from Universität Hamburg and Moscow together with the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Office have presented a unique collection of cartographical material. For the first time since completion of the so-called World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) some ten years ago, the researchers have been able to record the results of the experiment in detailed maps. Researchers Develop Innovative Food and Feed from Native Legumes

Today the federal minister Ilse Aigner officially handed over funding in the order of 2.1 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) to the joint project "LeguAN". Strong Magnetic Fields Evidently Originated Shortly After Big Bang

Summer Sea Ice in Arctic: New Minus Record Anticipated

The summer sea ice coverage in the Arctic will most likely recede to the record low of 2007 or even lower. Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Gerdes, sea ice physicist at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Ocean Research in the Helmholtz Association stated at an Arctic workshop in Bremen on Monday that all the signs point to a very low minimum for September. Media Interest in Climate Change: EU and USA Demonstrate Similar Reactions

A research team at the Institute for European Cultural Anthropology has published the results of a study on store cards and consumer behavior. The study found that each German citizen has around four store cards in his or her wallet. Consumers, however, do not heed warnings and criticisms from data and consumer protection agencies because aspects such as shopping, discounts and emotions dominate their attitudes towards storecards. First Global Geochemical Map of Earth's Surface: The Earth's Surface and Crust Are Not In Equilibrium

The top layer of the Earth's continental crust demonstrates a different chemical make-up to that of deeper parts of the crust. A recently published study by the KlimaCampus at the Universität Hamburg has for the first time compared the relatively thin layer at the surface with the entire upper crust. The results: Mildly weathered rocks are more frequently found at the Earth's surface than in deeper layers. The new data is important for models used to research geo-historical climate change. Die Max-Planck-Forschungsgruppe für Strukturelle Dynamik an der Universität Hamburg fand heraus, dass sich ein Isolator durch einen Laserblitz für kurze Zeit in einen Supraleiter verwandeln lässt. Die Beobachtungen liefern einen Beitrag zum Verständnis von so genannten Hochtemperatur-Supraleitern, einer Klasse von Supraleitern, die eines Tages Strom bei Raumtemperatur verlustfrei leiten könnte und von der Experten daher ein großes Anwendungspotenzial erwarten.
