HPA und Universität Hamburg entwickeln Nautische Zentrale der Zukunft

In den letzten drei Jahren hat sich die Anzahl der Großschiffe mit über 330 Metern Länge im Hamburger Hafen verdoppelt. Damit die Mitarbeiter und Mitarbeiterinnen der Nautischen Zentrale, der Verkehrsleitstelle des Hamburger Hafens, darauf angemessen reagieren können, haben Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen des Fachbereichs Informatik der Universität Hamburg, das Hamburger Informatik Technologie-Center (HITeC) e. Academy of World Religions at Universität Hamburg Participates in Research Training Group for Islamic Theology Funded by the Mercator Foundation

The Academy of World Religions at Universität Hamburg and the Westphalian Wilhelms-Universität Münster, the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, the University of Osnabürck and the University of Paderborn will be able to offer doctoral positions within the context of a research training group. Double Book Presentation: 100 Years of the Humanities and German Literature

The Historical Seminar and Department of German Literature are celebrating their 100th anniversary. In honor of this double anniversary, volumes 18 and 19 of "Hamburg's Contributions to the History of Science" have been appearing. Successful Research Training Group "Physics with New Advanced Coherent Radiation Sources" to Continue

The research training group "Physics with New Advanced Coherent Radiation Sources" (GRK 1355) will receive about 3.2 million euros from the German Research Foundation for another four-and-a-half years. The new funding period will run from 1 April 2011 to 30 September 2015. Spokesperson for the research training group is Dr. Klaus Sengstock from the Institute for Laser Physics. The authorization of the application means that the research training group has reached the maximal funding period, attesting to its extraordinary scientific quality. More...

New Research Training Group on String and Quanta Field Theory

Universität Hamburg has successfully applied with the German Research Foundation for a new research training group on "Mathematics inspired string theory and quanta field theory" (GRK 1670). The group's spokesperson is Dr. Bernd Siebert from the Department of Mathematics in the School of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences. The funding sum is about three million euros and the group will begin its work on 1 April 2011 and conclude on 30 September 2015. Get more information here... and here...

Prospects: Natural History Museum at a Glance

Statement by the Academic Senate (AS) on Economic Proposal for 2011/2012

The Academic Senate reaffirmed its statement of 9 November 2010 (AS 682) with regard to needs-based public financial support for the university which is indisensable to the realization of the university's social duties as they are formulated in the university's guidelines as well as the surmounting of underfinancing in this area. The Academic Senate supports the president of Universität Hamburg's demands to increase the university's budget from previous years' financial support by about 50 million euros and to abolish the structural financial deficit. Hannelore "Loki" Schmidt died today, 21 October. The wife of former chancellor Helmut Schmidt was named Honorary Senator of Universität Hamburg in 1990. In 2000, she received an honorary doctorate from the department of biology at Universität Hamburg. In 2006, Loki Schmidt inaugurated the Museum of Useful Plants, which had been named in her honor, in the Botanical Gardens in Klein Flottbek. More...

Universität Hamburg Successful in BMBF Program for Sustainable Management

Excellence Initiative:
Universität Hamburg Enter the Competition with Nine Projects

For the third round of the Excellence Initiative to Promote Science and Research at German universities, Universität Hamburg has submitted nine draft proposals in all three funding lines. For the first funding line (graduate schools), five schools have developed concepts for their own graduate schools. In the second funding line (excellence clusters), draft proposals from the fields of physics, linguistics, education and neurosciences have been submitted. Exhibition in Loki Schmidt Haus: "Seeing Leaves in the Soul"

For the First Time, Scientists at Universität Hamburg Investigate Species Diversity in the Deep Seas of Japan

Since mid-August, the Russian expedition "SoJaBio" under the direction of Dr. Marina Malyutina, Institute of Marine Biology in Vladivstok, is travelling on the Russian research ship "RV Akademik Lavrentyev" in the Japanese deep seas in order to investigate species diversity on the ocean floor in this as-yet completely unexplored area.
Four researchers of Universität Hamburg, Dr. Angelika Brandt and the biologists Laura Würzberg, Nikolaus Elsner and Torben Riehl are participating in this pioneering project. Six other scientists from the Public Zoological Collection of Munich, the Senckenberg Institute in Frankfurt, the German Research Center for Marine Biodiversity in Wilhelmshaven, Freie Universität Berlin and a small business from Kiel as well as a Swiss scientist from the University of Genf are also on board. The first "transsect" investigation, which is an analysis of a series of measurements and observations along a straight line, has already been successfully concluded at a depth of 3,300 meters. "MuMiS" Research Project Enters Next Round

The Volkswagen Foundation will continue to support the research project "Multilingualism and Multiculturality in Academic Study," or "MuMiS" for short, with a total of 300,000 euros for another two years. The project is part of the funding initiative "Univerity of the Future." Launched in May 2008, the "MuMiS" has been following the process of internationalization at German universities in three projects at the universities of Hamburg, Siegen and Kassel over a period of two years. Over 40,000 Applications for Universität Hamburg: Electronic Application and Admissions Procedure Worked Smoothly

On 13 August, Universität Hamburg will send letters of acceptance to applicants for winter semester 2010/11. There were a record number of applications: 43,894 prospective students applied for 8,500 spaces. Of these applicants, 36,821 are first-time students. Resolution on the School Reform by the Faculty Council in the School of Education, Psychology and Human Movement

The School of Education, Psychology and Human Movement (EPB) is responsible within the Universität Hamburg for the quality of teacher training.
This responsibility and knowledge of national and international research findings and experience with school instruction have led us to the unanimous conclusion that learning together longer in heterogenous groups improves the developmental possibilities of all school pupils and constitutes progress in the current selective, three-part school system.
Thus, the EPB's faculty council will support the six-year primary school in the Hamburg referendum on school reform on 18 July 2010. It also condemns the proposal by the "Wir wollen lernen!" ("We want to learn!") initiative.

How do volcanic eruptions affect the climate? Until now, scientists assumed that eruptions with high sulfur-dioxide content reaching far into the atmosphere lead to the creation of aerosols. These aerosols could in turn cool the earth. Another effect - the fertilization of ocean algae - has now been investigated by researchers in the "Integrated Climae Analysis and Prediction" (CliSAP) Excellence Cluster at the University of Hamburg. Promoting Language Skills of School-age Children from Migrant Families: Results from a Model Program

The model program "Promoting Children and Adolescents from Migrant Families - FÖRMIG" ran from 2004 to 2009 in ten German states with the support of the federal government. The Institute for International and Intercultural Comparative Education at the University of Hamburg followed the project under the direction of Prof. Dr. Ingrid Gogolin, who is all the project's spokeswoman.
